Flashcards, right brain exercises and all that jazz.

Did you know that the right side of the brain develops much before the left side of the brain?

Human brain is divided into two hemispheres. Right and left. While the right brain is responsible for art, music, emotions, creativity and imagination, the left is responsible for math, linguistic skills, logic, reasoning etc. Upto the age of 7, in a child's brain, it is the right side that is more dominant. Slowly as they grow and acquire various skills, the left side sort of comes online. What is most interesting is, that the right side of the brain is also responsible for photographic memory and retention. So by training the right brain at the right time (which is when it is most dominant) you can help the child develop better memory. And the best way to do this is by showing flashcards at a very high speed - 2 cards per second.

I heard about it pretty late in life. My son was already 2 years old when I took it seriously and started showing him flashcards of flags of the world. It was fun. He loved the sessions. And what more? He showed them to us, making up his own words for the names of the countries he knew not. Even then, I never took it very seriously and never did it regularly.

Until one day. I bought an atlas for him and he was flipping through it. He suddenly stopped at South America and yelled "Amma, look.. Venezuela!". It took me a couple of seconds to register what he had said. There were tiny circles with flags of countries. And to my astonishment, he could name almost all of them. "Cuba.. Peru.. Argentina.." my eyes widened with every word he uttered. And that's when I started taking it a bit more seriously and started showing him flashcards more regularly.

Soon, they were not enough. I could not find the right flashcards that I knew would interest him. I wasn't sure what to do next. And that's when I met this wonderful person on Instagram who is very vocal about right brain exercises and she encouraged everyone to make flashcards of our own. 'We love what we make. And when we love it, our kids will love it too.' she said. That's all I needed. I went on a flashcards making spree.

And here I am sharing some of the flashcards I have made. We love them. I hope you all do too!

Dinosaurs Flashcards

Insects Flashcards

States and Union Territories of India Flashcards

Elements of the Periodic Table (1-30)

How to use them?

  1. Take printouts and laminate them. Or, get them printed on A5 sized 300 gsm paper.

  2. Spend five minutes everyday and show them to your child. You must show them very quickly - about 2 cards per second. That's it. Let your child play around with them.

  3. Do not do this exercise if either of you is not feeling like it or not enjoying it.

  4. Never force them to sit for flashcards.

  5. Never test them.

  6. Stop before they want to stop.

You can start this exercise when the baby is 2-3 months old and upto when they turn about 7 years old.

Good luck!
